Here's Whats Happening in Room 168:
Reading - In reading we are continuing to summarize and deepen our understanding of characters by analyzing traits, as well as learning how to sequence a text, as we read realistic fiction. Our main story this week, "Me and Uncle Romie", is inspired by collage artist Romare Bearden. Along with working on the above skills, students will be tapping into their creative sides as they create their very own collages!
Math - In Math we are half way through our first module. This next part of module one will heavily focus on multistep word problems. Students will learn to use visual representation to model their thinking.
Science - In Science we are deepening our understanding of how the earth changes over time and how this will have an impact on humans. We are using evidence of rock patterns to explain evidence of change and weathering over time.
Social Studies - In Social Studies we are learning about how to use map skills including, a compass rose, a map key and a line scale, to analyze a map. We are also learning about how to use latitude and longitude to determine precise locations.
Writing - In writing we are working on commas usage when writing more complex sentences. We also have begun to focus a little more on paragraph writing and will continue to do so.
Spelling - Our spelling pattern will be long and short 'i' vowels.
Information About Homework:
Every night students are expected to read for 20 minutes, this includes the weekend! Every week at the beginning of the week the students will be receiving a spelling contract. The contract lists an assignment for each night of the week (Monday- Thursday). All work is due to me on Friday. As we navigate our way through the new math series, homework will vary from day to day depending on that day's lesson. Please check your child's assignment notebook to see what homework has been assigned for that day. We do write in our assignment notebooks as a class but if you ever have any questions please feel free to contact me! At this time that is all the homework that you should expect your child to have. As that changes, updates will be made here; so don't forget to check back regularly!
